This was to be the ultimate "have my cake and eat it too trip. I was meeting my girlfriend who might very well be a future mate on a Thursday evening at our hotel of choice the Almirante. I met this girl through A Foreign Affair, a much discussed marriage agency with an office across the street from the Almirante. She is a 24 year old knock out who might just be the most genuine, good hearted person I have ever known. However if I am going to have to give up my hobby at some time in the future, I sure as hell am not traveling from L.A to Cartagena without having at least two days of hobby fun.
I took the Copa midnight redeye that stops in Pamana City and gets you to Cartagena at 1:45 in the afternoon. Given that I had really only one real party night since I knew I would need 1 night off before my novia spent 3 days wearing out my 38 year bones, I had to suck up an imperfect night of sleep and make my first night my big one.
I check into the Hilton for $79 per night. This might be $15-20 lower than normal but if you are willing to make a reservation where you sacrifice your first night's deposit if you don't show, the rate is available. At any rate my intention was to follow Shadow's suggestion and start with the Manilla House followed by Casa Del Marino. I really felt more comfortable asking the bellman for advice on a taxista that I could trust to "hang with me for the night" Being alone in Cartagena is NOT like going solo in SAn Jose C.R. for example. I figured a hotel referral added some legimaticy and my bellman suggested ROBINSON who camps out in front of the Hilton. When I was ready to start my evening. I found him and explained my desires. I am very particular and wanted nothing less than a 9 in every way. I am into the one girl all night experience rather than the get hammered go upstairs, come down, repeat rinse etc. What I have always loved about Costa Rican chicas was the easy ability to get the GFE and have the real total package evening of great companionship, bar and club hopping and finally sack hopping with a girl that is really having just as much fun as you.
Yeah no shit they are getting paid, but in my what are now 2 favorite countries, Colombia and Costa Rica this kind of pleasurable A-Z experience with a 19-24 hottie is fucking easy. All you have to do is A) make um laugh, B) Treat them with respect, C) get them away from what for them is quite frankly a boring life. Money or no, charm will always win out with a non-pro and semi-pro, most of the time with a hardened pro.
Sorry for the aside, I met Robinson outside and you could meet a nicer, more respecful, no bullshit guy. I spoke of my desire to find said "hottie" and told him of my intererary, I also asked him for a total night fee. After a brief and easy natured negotiation, we settled on $5 an hour no matter what we did or where we went. Yes maybe $4 was negotiable and I am not going to into this further. Robinson much to my dismay gave me the bad news that LA DOLCE VIDA HAS CLOSED DOWN. This was due apparently to underaged girls. Damn, I was so looking forward to that place. We took off for the Manilla House where my struggling Spanish (2 years of recent study) got some real exercise. It was a tuesday and Manilla had the following, maybe 3-5 guys and 15-18 women. This place was INCREDIBLE there were maybe 4 or 5 real solid 9's and the rest in the 7-8 category. Blew away the Blue Marlin in San Jose for example. It took me 5 seconds to spot my mate for the night. The place is cool in that you walk through the house complete with first room bar second room dance floor and ultimately end up outside in the backyard-patio.
The girls are milling about back there with no real aggresive tendencies like your basic strip bar. Robinson and I ordered drinks, I motioned for my smiling, dark skinned 20 year old named Johanna to join us and our evening began. We ordered two rounds and again, I am huge into looks, but if my girl ain't gonna loosen up and feel the happy party vibe, Jennifer Lopez wouldn't do the trick. Well she immediately hit my strike zone with a wonderful blend of charm, excitement about the evening ahead of her on the town and and a touch of sexiness.
We planned our bar and club stops all the time the three of us Robinson, Johanna and myself sitting around a table getting slowly sloshed talkin about our lives. The next ten minutes kind of formed my overall opinion of the Colombian women. There were 3-4 other girls sitting alone at a table behind us. 2 of them managed to overhear and enter into our conversation, Mind you again I am an imtermdiate spanish speaker, but these other two knowing damn well I had my girl of choice simply wanted to get in on the fun and join our table. The next two rounds were on these two girls. Robinson, myself and a trio of 9's laughing and talking up a storm. "A True Trigger T moment" At no point up to now price was even mentioned with Johanna. I motioned to Robinson and he to the house manager. I paid a $30 fee or house fine to get her out of there and off we went.
For the next 6 hours until 4 we hit every night spot, Mr. Bubilla, others in the area and ended up a La Escollara until 4 AM When we got back to the Hilton I gave Robinson $35 bucks and wihout hitch (The Hilton seems to be the most unconcerned with vistors) we went up to my 8th floor room with balcony overlooking the ocean. We had a drunken session on the balcony, one in bed, slept till 11 had a third when finally after Johanna sort of hanging around till 12 with a "what are we doing tonight?) attitude I sent her on her way. Keep in mind at no point did I ever talk price or did she. I simply had $55 bucks laying on the dresser and she politely slipped it in her purse. I told her I had to leave the next day for the states, we exchanged numbers and E-mail and she has e-mailed me 3 times within the week of my return.
Needless to say a "10 beller" within the next few days I would like to give my opinion and overview to anyone interested about the following - I am a Costa Rica vet and my this was my second Cartagana journey. The world is not perfect, because if it was, we would have the beauty, serenity, safety of Costa Rica especially the beaches combined in one magical place that also had the night life of Cartagena, the struggling economy that so works to our advantage, and fucking A the best., most well rounded women that I have experienced anywhere. I am thinking about making a 7 day adventure combining the two, anyone ever done this? I'll also do a brief fill in on the rest of my trip including a very enlighting stop in the office of A foreign Affair.
I have developed a real sense now of how to carry on a Cartagena evening including a venture into the old town, a historicand incedibly cool Spanish feeling section. Taking a girl there for dinner and/or drinks is a real memory. Sorry for the length, but it was an evening that will now always be my standard.
