Caught the 3:30 flight Miami to Cartagena,with Avianca,and arrived at our destination at dusk..about a 2.5 hour flt. Going thru customs INTO Columbia is a breeze, and the process takes about 10 minutes. A cab ride from the airport to the Lagito area of Bocagrande takes about 15 minutes and should cost you no more that 8000 pesos (about $4 US dollars). Prior to leaving I was in contact with an aprtment broker named Ed Salence, a Belgin ex-pat who speaks perfect english. He showed us a wide array of apartments for rent....we needed a 2 bedroom as I was with a buddy..we saw everything from $40 dollars per night to a $175 (normally $250) a night 3 level penthouse, complete with our own pool on the roof with ocean view, about 12 stories high.
We opted for something in the middle at $100 in Torre Marina, which was newer construction no bugs, strong central air an 8th floor ocean view with security in the lobby to keep out the riff raff, and most importantly no problem with taking in girls.. Ed by the way is a super friendly guy and will help you out with securing you about anything that you need..... I highly recomend ..here is his e-mail esalence@yahoo.com.First some logistical info. 1. looked for a cash machine ..ATM ...that would work for my cirrus card, and after about 10 machines I found one on calle 5 1 block from San Martin. The ATM machine is in the secure lobby of Bancolumbia.
2. If you are a work out buff the Hilton has a pretty decent gym...cost for non residents is 10000 pesos...$5 per day. 3. A good restaurant in Lagito is Riquismo, and a good pizza place in Bocagrande is Faroh on calle 5 and San Martin or Pichollo on San Martin and Calle 8 (IMHO Picholo is better pizza, but Faroh has a better view of Chicas walking by). Also many of the restaraunts in Plaza Santa Domingo were excellent. 4. For fast internet connection (for Columbia) try the cyber coffee shop across the street from Riquismo..I beleive it is called PUNTO. 5 Taxis anywhere in town cost 3000 pesos in the day and generally 4000 pesos at night (2 US dollars)
Ok now for the stuff you really want to hear, 1st night out on the town we ended up at La Dolce Vita..across the street from the Las velas hotel about 2 blocks from the beach..I had heard this place hyped in so many past posts that I just had to see it for my own eyes, and last time I was in town it was closed sooo....here we are no cover to get in and 7000 pesos per drink ,the girls generally ranged from the freightening to the slighlty above average looking. Occasionally you will find a gem here. What I hear from some Cartagna vets is the best girls will be stashed away with a tourist the whole stay while they are in town..essentially taking them out of circulation (and this was my modus opperandi as well) saw a couple of old faces from my past trip, girls from Escollera (some of you regulars probobly know Marsala and her sister from Medilon), skinny bucktoothed..but still pretty...never sampled though. By the way guys, the girls FOR THE MOST PART will not approach you here (unlike Cuba) so if you see something you like , you must make the 1st move.
I pulled a 19 yr old flaca the 1st night named Illiana...rubia and pequina but still abit hardcore for my taste (but thats what I should expect at this place) sex was so so.she never asked for $$$ but I slipped 80,000 in her purse befor she left...she wanted me to met her at La dolce vita the next night I said we'll see.TALVEZ. Next night I started at La Escollra and it was a shell of its former self as compaired to last January...very DEAD...although a few girls..don't arrive before 11.It was here I met a girl from Medillon named Cielo....very nice smile and very friendly and bubbly personality...after some dancing and drink had a decent sesion with her... she asked for no no $$$ and I gave her nothing however ,we did go jet sking the next day so there was a minor expence 40000 pesos for 40 minutes on the jet ski (if you are good at bargaining that is)
The 3rd night I found the girl I would spend the rest of my trip with...a 19 yr old named Paola...who was on break from school in Baranquia.....ABSOLUTLY BEAUTIFUL!!l!!!..long straight black hair, very petite with perky breast and just a little bit shy (picture a latin Allysa Milano) I met her at La Dolce Vida standing alone in the corner...wow what a find...A true girl friend experience from that point on (or at least the illusion of one)ODDS and ENDS....things to do with your chica when you find a good one....carriage rides in Central, trip to Isla Rosario, dinner at plaza Santa Domingo, or at La Olla restaurant.
Looked at some property for sale in Lagito and there are some bargains to be had....1 bedroom Condo facing the ocean is $25,000..2 bedroom is $35,000 and very nice..I met Bruce the guy who runs the TSM site and he is a super friendly guy..I believe he bought a 2 level penthouse the day I left...and I think it will be for rent..All in all I like Cartagena...I usually go to Cuba but Cartagena has some creature comforts that I really enjoy ,not widely possible in Cuba I.E. cable tv and Internet and good food, and generally speaking the girls IMHO are better looking than cubans and are more into the long term stay over thing. and GFE.
As a postscrpt...for all of you who are parallized with fear from tales of Columbian crime and kidnapping..I never had an incident or was in any way intimidated or fearful...(and I stick out as an Obvious Gringo, rubia etc...)...
