For those whove never been there, Ill start with a bit of tourist info. I can say straight away that I do not think it worth going just for cheap sex, and that the security situation with the guerrillas is deteriorating.
The city is orientated north/south, and pushed up to the mountains in the east. The streets are numbered on a grid system, carreras running north/south, parallel to the mountains, calles east/west. The city is vast, with a population of over six million increasing daily, and most of it dangerously poor. It is best to think of it as a ribbon, bounded by the Cenro Historico to the south, carrera 15 to the west, and the newer, richer suburbs to the north. The Centro Historico is the only area of tourist interest, but is said to be dangerous in terms of petty crime. This has now been compounded by the tense situation with the guerrillas, and campaigning for the elections in May, with the possibility of bombs being aimed at sites like the Presidential Palace and the Congress. The resulting security measures are very visible, from special forces in full battle dress, through national and local police, to private security guards with large truncheons and dogs who look as though theyd be delighted to have the opportunity of using them on someone. Petty crime does not seem a realistic possibility, at least in daylight.
At night the streets can be deserted, and its best to get the cheap taxis for anything but the shortest journeys along well-lighted streets, when you know exactly where youre going. As for bombs, half of the senators are said to be in the pay of drug barons, so maybe the political center is the safest place to be. Organised tourism has been canceled, so there is no political reason to attack tourists. A bomb did go off a couple of days ago in a town 25km from Bogota. When you arrive you have to fill in a customs form and hand in the top copy. Keep the carbon for leaving. There is a helpful information desk to the right of the exit from customs who will advise on hotels and make a provisional booking. There is no problem about finding a room, but some hotels have closed recently so it is best to check first. You have to make a decision as to which area to stay in. The Centro Historico is cheaper - I got a reasonable hotel for $25 with breakfast, the Dann Colonial. Also bear in mind that Bogota is at over 2600 meters, so you will probably need a few days of gentle sightseeing to get used to it.
The climate is pleasant, generally sunny in the morning, with cloud and possible rain in the afternoon. Nights are a bit cold. The mountains in the east, often covered with cloud, can be seen from all parts of the city. There are restaurants and cafes everywhere, with good cheap food. The coffee is of course good, and Colombian beer is drinkable. The women of Bogota are not particularly attractive, unless you like them short and fat.
The good -i.e. expensive and safe - clubs are in the north, the Barrio Chico, near the Zona Rosa. Its $8 from the Centro.(All prices converted at 2000pesos to the dollar, which makes them seem more expensive. At time of writing the rate is over $2300.) The taxista drove past Porkys and Extasis to one which was recommended by his control center, which was completely deserted. They said I should come back later. He then drove me back to Extasis at no extra charge. The advantage of this is that there are three clubs together - the others are Casanova and Copacabana. The disadvantage is that there seems to be nothing else for miles, except a dismal sandwich bar round the corner.
All clubs have rooms for $30 short time, and its also $30 to take the girls out. This can be avoided by waiting till 1am when the clubs close. The girls themselves asked anything from $50 to $100, and were generally willing to bargain. The differences were in the price of the drinks and the quality and quantity of the girls. At least in the prices I paid. They werent written on the menus, and I had a feeling the waiters were making them up as they went along. I stuck to Colombian beer to keep a relatively clear head. All of them provide intermittent strip shows and very loud music.
Extasis charge the outrageous price of $8 for all drinks, to which was added a compulsory tip of almost $2. And I then had to fight to get my change. To be fair, the beer was two bottles in a large glass. And there were some very attractive women. I couldnt keep my eyes off one, who came and sat beside me and admitted that she had fallen in love with me. Naturally I bought her a drink, before Id even found out how much they cost. But I got some useful information out of her, and a phone number. Which Ive tried and does not seem to be hers.
There were also attractive women at Casanovas, where a bottle of beer cost $4, plus fight for the change - I was not in a generous mood at this point. There were fewer women at Copacobana, and the attractive ones were either attached to men already there, or not interested in me. I dont know whether theyd been brought in by the men, or found in the club. I did see a woman being brought in by a man in one of the other places. Maybe he wanted a threesome. Copacobana charged me $7 for a bottle of beer, so it was all round the worst value.
Having come from Cuba I was not impressed by the prices, of the drinks or the girls, especially since there were few customers on a Sunday night. Having drunk too much beer on an empty stomach I decided to call it a night. Driving away from the clubs there was a woman standing on the kerb, who looked all right from a distance. The taxista said he knew her, so I invited her in for a chat. She wasnt bad, asked $50 and accepted $30, so we went back to the hotel. There was no problem about her staying for an hour, though I think they would have charged me the double room rate for all night. In fact it was all over in less than an hour, since she was an anxious housewife wanting to get back to her nino. Still, I felt Id made a start, with a typical example of the generous Colombian figure.
There are lots of adverts in the papers for $5 or $10 dollars, with phone numbers and sometimes addresses. Taxi drivers advised that such places were dangerous. Also someone in another thread - I cant remember whether it was about Bogota or Cali - said such places are a waste of time because the women are not attractive. I decided to believe both claims rather than spend my time checking them out. Still, it would be interesting to hear from anyone who has been more enterprising.
