After about a week in Cartagena, I decided to visit Barranquilla for a weekend because of its’ proximity to Cartagena. Something about visiting Shakira’s home town appealed to me and TSM'er and X-Treme member Hunter agreed to tag along. We shared a cab ride with TSM’er Sailor who turned out to be a pretty nice guy. The trip there was uneventful (it took something like 2-3 hours and the highway there appeared well-maintained for South America) and we had to pass through something like 3 police/military check points.
Hunter and I checked into Hotel Princess in El Prado and were charged 75,000 CP a night for nice (if small) rooms with nice amenities (air-con, cable tv, frig, agua caliente, etc), while Sailor decided to stay in another hotel. The reception clerk at Hotel Princess assured me that they were “chica-friendly”, however, I didn’t get a chance to check out this claim.
During my first night in Barranquilla (it was a Friday night), Hunter and I became separated (long story) so I ended up checking out the scene a bit solo. I checked out a couple of disappointing regular discos which were within walking distance of Hotel Princess in some mall, before heading out for the supposed “ground zero” for quality pro action in Barranquilla, “Lusitania” (not certain of the spelling). I walked in during a strip show and the cover charge was 10,000 CP. The chicas wanted 130,000 CP for all night or 80,000 for 1 hour.
I heard that you might have to pay a barfine also but it might depend on how much you drink and at what time you want to leave with your chica. There were probably 20-25 girls working when I entered at about 12:30 AM. Even though there were 5 or 6 chicas beyond the quality of Cartagena at the time, I declined to leave with anyone. I guess I am too used to Cartagena prices. I wasn't sure why they would charge MORE in Barranquilla but that was the case at this place (I found out later why). And the beer was 10,000 a pop for a small can of Club Colombia cerveza so it was not a very cost-effective place.
I apeared to be the only gringo in the place but Hunter informed me later that he had been there earlier but balked at the high drink prices and took off. Apparently, Sailor was there earlier also and took someone out with whom he was quite satisfied (he told me later). But, interestingly enough, we were all there that night but at different times and all missed each other.In the morning, I woke up to find a note placed under my door that said, “Don’t like Barranquilla. Returned to Cartagena. –Hunter”. So Hunter took off rather quickly and his legend continues….
Not wanting to do Barranquilla alone again that night, I got a hold of Sailor and after hitting a Mexican restaurant, we decided to check out a couple of regular bars. We hit a couple in El Prado which were both fantastic and FULL of women this Saturday night. One was called La Quinta (more of an up-scale discoteca) and the other was called Tropical Cocktails (similar to the ones in Cartagena and Medellin). I saw no less than 5 women that I would rate as 9+’s in these bars at a bunch of 8+’s. Unfortunately, we decided (bad decision in retrospect) to hit other casas in Barranquilla instead of sticking around.
We must have hit 6 or 7 other casas and the quality was AWFUL. Sure, the prices were cheaper than Lusitania but most of these women I would not have screwed for free. It was obvious then why they can (and do) charge so much (for Colombia) in Lusitania since they appear to have pretty much cornered the market for quality pros in Barranquilla.
I returned to Cartagena the next day while Sailor spent a few more days in Barranquilla before making plans to hit Cali. I was very tempted to join him since I’ve been to Cali a couple of times and loved it. However, I really wanted to hit Medellin and check out the scene there. When I returned to Cartagena, it was pretty much the same as before- slow for Cartagena. It was during that next week in Cartagena that I made up my mind (for sure) to journey to Medellin (FARC or no FARC). I decided to go for 10 days which I figured would give me ample time to check out both pro and non-pro opportunities. Look for the last portion of my report in about a week which will describe in detail my Medellin experience….
