Prostitution Report
from Colombia

After three and a half weeks in Colombia I really have nothing really new to offer except a photo gallery of some of the women I encountered (and you’ll understand why we go to Cartagena). Many girls just came by the apartment to chat, have lunch or diner or use the internet. Of course many did alot more :-), but over three weeks I must have met 25 girls. Some of my best experiences came from just smiling and doing some exploring (on my bike rides meet two great ladies and strolling the old town late in the afternoon is like plucking diamonds from the mines (and you own the mines). Just smile, laugh and you almost can have what you want. I have business cards made up and if the girl is shy I just give her a card and move on -- 75% of the time she’ll call in the next four days :-), what a country. I NEVER went to a casa and visited LDV (Dulca Vita) only once to say hello to Aldo (now running the casino). If you have time you don’t need these places to find “working girls” -- almost all girls can be convinced given time. Two girls from amigos.com slept with me on the second date and one I saw regularly -- cost, nada!

Okay, enough, but what I can do is give a short review and comparison between the Dominican Republic and Colombia (or CTG). There was a few questions on the board about this, so since I spend a great deal of time in both places here is my analysis.

Dominican Republic Vs Colombia
First is the culture difference. Even though both are Spanish speaking countries, they are as different as night and day. Prostitution is built into the Dominican culture -- every little bar you see has girls for rent, there are short time motels in every town and large populated areas and everyone has a girl for you. BUT, most tourists never see this and visiting Boca Chica or Sosua they (you) only encounter the “tourist sex scene” which is very hard core and pathetic. Colombia is more like Mexico and there is really no “tourist sex scene” but there is still as many girls available, just in a different form.

The best example to make you understand is the beach. No doubt the DR has better beaches BUT there is no beach culture. Most Dominicans go to the beach on Sunday as a family outing and few lie in the sun in their g-string. Getting a girl from the beach means someone has to bring her to you and this means some hard core puta from the local barrio. Now, in Colombia (ctg) the beach is a cultural and meeting place (as Brazil) and all girls make an appearance and show off their wares. By using Tony (he just scouts the surrounding talent that is there at the moment for you) or just walking and smiling you can meet easily a few delicious morsels daily. My favorite tactic is to wait to see someone that is appealing to me (which is every five minutes on the weekend) go into the water and sorta just follow her in and try smiling and starting a conversation. It works amazingly well and often I’ve met girls even with their moms and brothers -- the beach is meant to be a meeting, flirting, showing off and even hooking stage -- amazing. This doesn’t exist in the DR. And this is just one example.

The music (both girls are amazing dancers), food, drinking and life outlook is also very different. No doubt the Colombian girl is much better education while the DR girl lives with little care or knowledge to the next day. Many girls hooking in Colombia (and even the ones not can be easily convinced :-)) make great girlfriends and only once I felt a “hard core” atmosphere (and I just trough her out). On the other side DR girls are much more direct (will look you in the eye, swirl that tongue and smack her lips) in what they are up to and if you ever take the night club tour with Dominican Billy of Puerta Plata you will be astonished with how many girls are available for sex (and these places are usually for the locals, not the tourists). Never seen this in Colombia. Yes, these country’s are alike but so, so, so different.

Some other observations in the difference in cultures:
1.) Over the last year maybe have met 50 Colombian women and the same amount from the DR. Of the 50, 5 had babies (single women under 30) in Colombia and 45 had babies (small children) in the DR. Make your own conclusion.

2.) In Colombia there are internet cafes (like the Philippines) everywhere. Not only tourists but full of Colombians (and a great place to meet girls). In the DR find a internet cafe in Pueto Plata (hard) and one or two in BC or Sosua and then usually tourists using them. Education is so, so different.

3.) In the DR almost all girls seem to be open to manage de trois’s and group stuff. In Colombia, girls rarely (but I do knew a few) are into kinky sex. They are more into boyfriends and one on one, while the DR is pay for play and you name it. Think DR is the most open Christian country there is, bare none. Go to church on Sunday morning and then sleep with your best friends boyfriend in the afternoon (especially if he has money). Sex is like eating in the DR -- it is natural, normal and no big deal. Now, tourists again only see the “gringo sex” which is not the real Dominican Republic. Have a Dominican take you out one night to where he goes and WOW!!! . Now Colombian women are also very hot, but they are still clinging to finding the special one and hopefully that is you. Even a street girl in Colombia could be a great girlfriend (street girls in the DR make you want to run and hide). A simple synopsis -- Colombia (again, I use Ctg as an example) is a cheap Brazil (as Rio). The Dominican Republic is an erotic Mexico (where, unlike Mexico, anything goes).

Getting there
The DR I think has five international airports and all together there are 25 flights a day back to the U.S. Santo Domingo and Puerto Plata are served by Northwest, Continental and American. It’s pretty easy. For Colombia (and getting to Ctg) there are alot fewer flights by U.S airlines (none to Cartagena) and connections through Bogota are hectic. I live in the LA area and now fly Copa to Cartagena. It is a red-eye flight (hate that) but easy connection through Panama City (good airport). Now, the funny thing it is about 20% cheaper to Colombia (at this moment there are flights from lax to ctg for under $500.00 and the same flight to pop (Puerta Plata) is over $700.00 and $600 to sdq. Go figure.

Accommodations
Here is a real advantage of Cartagena over BC or PP. Tons of hotels in Bocagrande or the old city with rating of 1 to 5 stars. In Laquito you can rent a nice apartment for maybe $40.00 per day and even mine (with all the toys :-)). In BC there two or three acceptable hotels (Zapatas and Costa Lunga) and in Sosua there is Europe and the new Palace. In PP there isn’t even a good deluxe choice except for ‘Sensations” which is really a short time motel with nice rooms. Of course Santo Domingo has tons of hotels, but most gringos go to the beach resorts. Another plus is 95% of the hotels (even the five star Almirante and Hilton) in Cartagena are Tsm (guest) friendly and most deluxe properties in the DR is a REAL PAIN! When was the last time you tried to get a girl in your room in the Jaragua with a big, big fuss :-).

Things to do and touring
Here the DR takes over. Renting a car and driving and exploring is my favorite thing to do in the DR. Maybe the small villages, go explore a mountain (highest ones in Caribbean are here) or hiking, search for a secret beach or just cruise around looking for chicas. Dominican girls will stare you to a stop and it is easy to pick up hitch hikers (all waiting for that slow bus). In Cartagena (or most other big cities in Colombia) you never set foot outside the city boundaries. Granted Cartagena is one of the most interesting, historical, and amazing cities in South America but you are still stuck there unless you want to fly some place. Best things to do is maybe rent a bike, take a city tour and visit the offshore islands. In the DR you have a whole country (and one of the most beautiful in the Caribbean) to explore.

Nightlife
This might surprise you, but I give the edge to the DR for Tsm style. Yes, there are discos and clubs in Cartagena, but there is nothing like Duarte street (BC) where every girl on it or inside a bar is available for take out. In Sosua there is the Hi-Caribe disco where 80% are available and the Merengue bar where the % is 100! Yes, Tu-Candela and La Escollera has some pay amateurs, but they are in the back and you have to look for them and a small % of the people there. Calle Arsenal has lots of clubs in Cartagena (as Mr. Bababia), but again, you’ll have to work for some attention and even harder to take someone home. Now, the Plaza Santo Domingo is amazing every night but this is not a “professional place” (but ask the flower girl for a quick girlfriend and she’ll find you one:-)). There is nothing that comes close to the daily grind at the PP bars (have Dominican Billy show you around) where every corner bar has chicas for take out. If your looking for quick action and sleazy nightlife, well the DR wins this round.

Local sites, food and $ and being a tourist
This is a close one I guess. Cartagena has so much to see and do and is such a joy to walk around (day or night) while only Santo Domingo has anything worthwhile to see and do. Once you’ve walked Duarte street in BC, well, that’s it or the darken and lonely streets of Sosua (and you need a car in PP, bars all far away) you might never want to do it again. You never get tired or bored walking and exploring Cartagena, it is just spectacular. Prices are cheaper in Cartagena (girls, food, cabs etc.) but not by much. The real downer to Cartagena is the touts (who prey on tourists) who never leave you alone and this really turns some people off -- just learn to look the other way and say a stern NO!, but they still bug the shit of you. Finding a working ATM or a bank in Cartagena is easy (and a great rate) while 90% of ATM don‘t seems to work in the DR. Both have alot of change houses.

Pretty girls
This has always been a big debate. I think the big problem here is something we overlook when we give Colombia the hands down winner. Yes, they are the winners in this category, but not by that much. What we forget is the girls we meet on vacation (and doing it Tsm style). Girls we meet are hookers on Duarte street or Haitian girls at the Merengue bar and some of these girls are down right UGLY. Colombian women are the some of the prettiest in the world and the girls we meet in vacation are some of the best (not so in the DR). They could be college girls on vacation you pick-up on the beach or a secretary working overtime at La Dulca Vita to make a few extra dollars. Meeting normal girls (more on this later) is so easy -- you don’t have to settle for 6’s, becasue 8’s and 9’s are just as easy -- not so in the DR. Only a crazy girl (meaning a normal secretary or college girl who does need a few extra pesos) would dare go to Boca Chica or Sosua at night and run the risk of being labelled a hooker and arrested (sad but true, the glory days of Boca and Sosua are gone). But, sit on El Conde in the afternoon (Santo Domingo shopping street that is closed to traffic) and watch the female traffic and your tongue will be hanging out just like Colombia -- difference is we never meet these girls in the DR, but in Colombia we do. Just my observation.

Getting layed
Even a blind, deaf, dwarf with his tongue cut out can get layed in both places. Prices are close, but if sex is the ONLY THING YOU WANT AND CARE LESS ABOUT ANYTHING ELSE then I guess the DR wins, but it is close :-). In ten minutes any cab driver can get you layed in the DR, in Colombia the casas (and far away) are open at night and daytime activities are limited. The DR is just one big brothel, Colombia has some respect -- what ever that means.

Score: 5=DR, 4=Ctg

Safety
This is certainly a big topic and my answer will surprise you. In the last five years I’ve been to Ctg maybe 8 times and the DR maybe 15. So this is from my experience and what I’ve seen. I’ve never encountered a problem in Ctg. I’ve seen a drug bust (where Eddy told me keep away from the door) and lots of armed guys around the city, but my biggest encounter with the police was trying to get a pass (verify she was over 18, she forgot her ID) so a girlfriend could go into La Escollera and dance (had to bribe the police). I live on the beach in Ctg and leave my bag all the time with the beach boys and nothing has ever been touched (in Brazil stuff was stolen weekly), never have heard a gun or even a story of someone being robbed (except Hunter, where someone broke into his apartment in El Centro and he ran him off with his sword). I’m sure if you walk the wrong part of town at a late hour your asking for trouble, but the same goes for Rio, NY or Los Angeles. Ctg has only one way in and out and it is highly guarded and I walk the streets (as many others) at 1.00 PM with no problem or worry. Yes, there was a small bomb go off a few month ago, but this was a protest against the electricity company and far away from everything. Now, over this same time frame I’ve been mugged twice in Sosua (old routine, two girls walk up to you, one grabs your dick and the other steals your wallet and a gold chain) and had a girl steal money from my hotel room in BC. Also, been in BC when a guy was stabbed for his wallet by motor concho guys passing by. So, from “my“ experience, well I’m going to call it a draw (and only because what happens 500 miles away in the mountains of Colombia with the rebels).

GF experience
Ah, this is where Colombia (Ctg) wins hands down and the real reason we go to Colombia. Unlike the DR (seems all the real beauties you see in SD have their noses up in the air, try picking one up on El Conde) all girls you see in Colombia (beach, shopping center, El Centro, supermarkets, maids, waitresses, etc) are really looking forward (and flattered) to be approached by a foreigner. There is no negative stigma here and even mothers (esp on the beach) look forward to you meeting their daughters -- it is amazing. Me and another Tsmer were looking at a new lounge chair for my apt in Vivero (their WallMart) and chatted with some girls next to us. In a few minutes they asked for our photo (with them) and exchanged phone numbers. Three days later the cute one called me as I was leaving. We are both in our 50’s and they in their 20’s -- what a place. Just walking the beach at sunset time, you never miss meeting a new girl (either on vacation or just watching the sunset, but you must approach them) or on my bike I met two girls on the street (dating one now). Not only are the Colombian girls gorgeous but most are approachable!!! I just put five business cards in my pocket and walk El Centro in the late afternoon. When I see something I like I just ask her a stupid question or try and start up a conversation (and my Spanish sucks). One out of two will respond and last week, all five cards were gone in two hours. You don‘t have to settle for prostitutes or casa girls (who, if in BC would have a mile long line of Italian men in tow for a Colombian street or casa girl also can be a great girlfriend and their look are 7’s and 8’s). Just go to www.amigos.com and compare the girls and photos from Colombia to the DR -- then you‘ll exactly know what I mean.

There is no better place to meet and date sexy, beautiful (and real GF potential) than Colombia. I’m sold. So why is these two country’s so different in this respect for us tourists (gringos). The reason for this discrepancy? My best answer is the places single foreign men go to in the DR a “normal” DR girl wouldn’t be caught dead in (fear of being arrested as a prostitute or hassled by police or being called a whore -- five years ago this wasn’t true and BC and Sosua were amazing). Now in Colombia these “normal” girls are just waiting for you to smile and make an approach. Dating a gringo doesn’t mean your a whore, but looking for a husband or a long term relationship.

In the DR, Dominican girl with a gringo usually means she is on the payroll. I guess it is a political (police) and culture difference that makes Colombia so wonderful. I‘ve never been in a place where it is so easy to meet beautiful (and I mean 9’s and 10’s), normal (have jobs or not hooking) girls than Colombia and no matter your age or looks (but a smile, happy attitude, and a laugh is a must) to have them as a real girlfriend -- AMAZING.

Score: 1=DR, 5=Ctg

Okay, the final total. Amazingly close. Which would I choose. Well, I plan to visit EACH a few times every year for the rest of my life :-). Of course your comments and your score is welcome here.

Dr=34 Colombia (Ctg) =37
