I managed to (THANKFULLY) get out of Cartagena without self immolating myself.
Just A word... THIS IS NOT A RAH RAH TRIP REPORT WITH LOTS OF MONEY SHOT TYPE DETAIL..JUST AN ACTUAL ACCOUNTING OF MY EXPERIENCE. MY INTENT IS NOT TO HIDE MY LITTLE SECRET CARTAGENA BY BAD MOUTHING IT.This turned out to be one of the few monger trips that I wished that I was at home about 1/3 of the way into the trip....WHY YOU MIGHT ASK?Well... after giving it a bit of thought I do not think that there is one simple answers to that question, but a number of small factors that piled up to a BUST of a vacation.
I WILL NOW MOUNT MY SOAP BOX.I beleive that one piece of the puzzle that created a bust of a trip was quite simply... FAMILIARITY BREEDS CONTEMPT!!.... by that I mean FOR ME the town and scene has grown stale, which is a shame because I used to be obsessed with this place. This is number???.trip to CTG ...LOTs.. . It just seems you see the same tired faces at LDV and Laguito/Boqagrande go to the same paces and restaurantes Tony at the beach etc etc.Unfortunately for me it is So convenient just to pop down to CTG, and my personality type is such that it is easy for me to get stuck into a rut.I had learned far back that,( like HELP in RIO)..I only use LDV as a last resort to meet woman when all other sourses are exhausted.Well due to some of my past contacts moving out of town, or being pregnant (not by me) quarels , changed cell phone #s etc etc. My contact list had grown short.But AHH YES THE BEACH!! THE BEACH CAN TURN UP SOME TREASURES! UNLESS..of course it rains 6 out of 8 days WHICH IT DID.As a result and in a despiration grasp at straws I was forced to go to LDV. I had met some gems here in the past and my options at this point where few.I know what you are thinking CTG is a good place for regular girls RIGHT!!..yes true and I know a few , but I was not in the mood to go "A COURTIN"I was looking for a HOMERUN ... in essence A GFE Semi PRO..A CUTE innocent FLACA new to the game.
And the casas here (Pleyboy club etc etc) are in a word and IMHO...GROSS!!! ..so that was out. As I wrote last week went in to LDV on a monday. It reminded me of a JR high dance. Boys all over here girls all over here nobody mixing and ALOT of chain smoking going on. YAWN! well I was NOT in a position to be real picky so I walked around a bit.I Promptly recognised about 80% of the girls in the place from pictures posted on this and other boards...looking very disinteresed as they puffed away on there CAMELS. Ok, I thought... chain smoker so what..disinterested... fine ...but UGLY, chain smoking and diinterested I could not bring myself to compromise myself to this level. After talking to about 5 different girls, I simply walked home ALONE in the driving rain.
LETS SEE NOW WHERE DID I PUT THAT RAZOR BLADE?Insert 2 more days of driving rain. and watching NOVELAS.Hooked up with another Buddy from a past trip, which improved my mood a bit , and I made another run at LDV. this time on a wednesday. To be honest the situation had improved a bit and I had kind of a bizarre occurance.Went in with a different mind set this time that I just wanted to have some fun and that I did not necesaarily have to get laid. Had a bit more fun this visit, just dancing and talking with several girls but I did not see a single one of the 25 girls there that I was remotely interested in taking home.
UNTIL... this sweet little...... innocent looking FLACA walked in. I did not hesitate and asked her if she knew how to salsa?..she said "si" and off we went (insert 1 hour of dancing drinking laughing...and standard courting ritual) when I thought the time was right, I asked her if she wanted to go to leave?..she looked shocked and offended and said NO!!!.....and promptly walked out of the place and never returned.......WOW..getting shot down at LDV is pretty bad..A NEW LOW WAS ASCENDED TO!!!
NOW WHERE DID I PUT MY PROZAC?LUCKILY there was a less attrractive but somewhat friendly girl who immediatly swooped in asking "donde tu amiga? " I said "no se" ended up going with her to TUCANDELA and Giro Mato til LATE!!! ( i.e. sunrise).. we end up back at my apartment and I was BUZZED and very tired and really just wanted to go to bed..ALONE and sleep.I asked her before we entered my apt. building what a night of company with her would cost. Fully expecting here to say 150,000-200,000 pesos, at which point my plan was to laugh and say "see ya" and walk away and go sleep.However, she thru me a curve ball and said "nada!" "SOY NO PUTA es GRATIS, yo solo quirro 5 mil para taxi" HMMMMM.... immediatly I was suspicus, but said "VAMOS"We proceeded to my apartment were she would not quite talking...BLA BLAH BLAH ad nausium!!.meanwhile I am slipping into REM sleep with my eyes open, and punctuating her diatrabe with alot of "ahh ha" and feigned interest. I finally said I have to go to bed and sleep... alone.
As Maslows pyramid would dictate SLEEP not SEX was my #1 priority at this point and I simply said here is taxi money.."ADIOS"...and I never saw her again. It seemed timing and fate were not to be my allies on this trip.To a degree I realise I have to shoulder part of the blame for my HORRIDE vaction. But like I wrote earlier it seems I try to relive fun times from past trips here but I seem to always come up short. I have discussed this syndrom with ZIPPY and it seems we have a consensus on this point. CARTAGENA is fun the first 2 - 3 times you visit but after that..keep your visits to a long weekend, and move on to a new location. The place is just to limiting.It really reminds me of a small town how it seems everyone know you and your business and everyone elses story as well. Especially the Laguito and LDV scene. If I may quote another poster the girls there at (LDV) are "THICK AS THIEVES" with there gossip . "ES VERDAD"!!!
Let me illustrate this with an example. I told one Laguito Hombre (a friend) that I was looking for one imparticular girl named ******** with a distictive tatto who I had met here in May.Promptly, the word had gott out., and latter that day a stranger who I had never seen befor in my life walked up to me and said."Hey I heard you were looking for ********* well" here is her cell number if you want to hook up with her" of course for a small propina.And if you think you are going to sneak around behaind girls backs with another girl/girls who live in Laguito FORGET IT!! you will be uncovered/ and busted! FIATE Mi "MUCHO CHISMOSO AQUI"
And another piece of the puzzle which creates my disdain is when I read (and see) these "ROLL CALLS" and the stupid overpaying that seems to ensue. under the following logic "hey to me 150,000 pesos is nothing and not worth haggling about"ok.. under the same line of logic paying $500 usd is nothing for me in Las Vegas for a girl...so why not pay the girl $600,000 pesos ($230 usd) in CTG...its still a bargain right
this above logic has lead to the incidious increase in prices in CTG from 40,000-60,000 in LDV when I first arrived here a few years ago, to now the 1st thing out of the girls mouths here is 200,000 pesos NON NEGOCIABLE!IMHO there is something about the group dynamic in these ROLL CALLS that brings out the most stupid and obnoxious in what other wise would be a good person.
As an example... I saw A group of UMV guys siiting togather at Riquisimo (in sept.) eatting. Of course the inevitable vender shows up selling sunglasses. This one UMV guy thought he would be a big shot in front of his buddies and lays into this sunglass vender yelling and making an scene, telling the guy to get out of here, and then laughing about it after the vendor had lurked off with his buddies on how he had" really shown him who was boss"
THE UGLY AMERICAN IS ALIVE AND WELL!!In these guys defence, the few I talked to in a one on one situation seemed to be decent and friendly.Do I SOUND BITTER..YES I AM! For not seeing my obvious character flaw earlier and returning to the "KNOWN QUANTITY" CTG for another beating and not striking into new areas MAS TEMPRANO!JUST a word on Avianca, you would be well advised to check on your departure time before leaving for the airport as it seems to be the norm for the flight into CTG from Medillon (that goes on to Miami) , is cancelled or is often quite LATE!Its time to strike into new territory PERERA? ARMENIA? NO SE?
